E.T.M. Attains
As testament to this commitment to quality, we underwent an independent conformity assessment to evaluate how our quality management systems measure up to ISO standards. In July 2002 we engaged the services of QMI (Quality Management Institute, a Division of CSA Group), a quality system auditing firm, to evaluate the current and ongoing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of E.T.M.'s Quality Management System in meeting the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 Standard. The results of the audit were extremely positive. The applicable requirements of ISO 9001:2000 were considered to be adequately implemented in the processes/activities audited. It was noted in the audit report that "it is evident that your personnel are effectively trained, skilled and knowledgeable in performing their technical and quality management work assignments." As a result, we are proud to announce that we are certified and registered to the ISO 9001:2000 Standard. ISO 9000 Background Information ISO 9001 sets out the requirements for an organization whose business processes range from design and development, to production, installation and servicing. - 30 - |

Out of this world! Newfoundland company brings Space Station work to Renfrew's own E.T.M. |
|
Guigne International Ltd. (GIL) of St. John's, Newfoundland has contracted Renfrew's own E.T.M. Industries to assist with building components for the world's first commercial facility for the International Space Station (ISS). The next step is to ship E.T.M.'s components to the Guigne-TBE team at Teledyne Brown Engineering of Huntsville, Alabama for integration into the Space-DRUMS facility.
Guigne's trademarked Space-DRUMS is being readied for delivery to the International Space Station in early 2003. The facility will provide a containerless environment in microgravity in which to process exotic materials, such as glasses, glass-ceramics and porous ceramics, that have not yet been manufactured on Earth. E.T.M. fabricated components and assisted with the assembly of two major systems of the Space-DRUMS facility: the Material Handling System (or robotic arm) and the Pellet Storage System. |

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has allocated nearly $200 million U.S. in ISS resources to this Newfoundland-based company, which represents nearly 10 percent of the resources available for this scientific work over the next five years. "This project demonstrates the capability of the Canadian high-tech industry and is an example of what can be achieved when diverse companies co-operate," said Peter Everett, Guigne's Space-DRUMS Program Manager who resides at Woodlawn. "We needed the work done to strict timelines and we needed to be assured that it could be space-qualified the first time," Everett added. "This was the first attempt by E.T.M. to produce and assemble space hardware. They had some initial doubts about their ability to undertake this demanding, high-precision work, but once under way, they surprised themselves and met or exceeded our expectations. "Our friends at NASA had their doubts that we, and by 'we' I mean the Guigne/E.T.M. Team, could pull this off. They no longer have any doubts," Everett said. Dr. James Crawford, Guigne Operations Team Manager at E.T.M. also noted the important role played by the Renfrew company. "E.T.M.'s role wasn't limited to providing tooling and machining services; they opened their doors to Guigne personnel, providing the necessary office space, Internet access, and other support services and resources," Dr. Crawford noted. "There were as many as 10 GIL personnel operating from E.T.M.'s facilities at any one time over the last couple of months." Space-DRUMS is scheduled to be launched and taken to the ISS by the Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-114 in January 2003 on User Logistics Flight One. The first contract for Space-DRUMS is with the Colorado Schools of Mines (CSM), the NASA Center for Commercial Applications for Combustion in Space (CCACS). Guigne International is a founding member of the CCACS and is industrial partner for the CSM. The first materials have applications in infrared glasses, porous and biodegradable porous materials for bone replacements, functionally-graded materials for insulators and energy transfer devices, and radiators for temperatures over 200C. "By launch date, Guigne will have invested $25 million U.S. on this facility," said Guigne VP Space Operations Ron Davidson, whose office is based in Ottawa. "Although seed money was provided by the CSA in the mid 90's, the major support for the facility has come from leases from NASA Commercial Centres and Europe. The Space-DRUMS facility assets will be assigned to Guigne Space Space Inc. (GSSI) in Huntsville, Alabama," said Davidson. "The research and development required to support the facility will remain in St. John's." "The Ottawa area is a prime spot to consider complementing the design and manufacture work required by some of the other space and sonar-related projects coming out of St. John's," said Davidson. "With the great success we have had working with E.T.M. we are considering this very strongly."
The Partners Headquartered in Paradise and St. John's, Newfoundland, Guigne has satellite offices in Nice, France; Bremen, Germany; Huntsville, Alabama; Calgary, Alberta; and Ottawa, Canada. These branch offices have been assigned various applications of the DRUMS technology and are in the process of cementing agreements to advance products to market. Guigne has 80 employees, including 7 PH.Ds, 7 Masters and MBAs, over 35 engineering and science degrees, as well as support and administrative staff. Founded in 1989, GIL has become a leading designed and manufacturer of products for the space, defense, fisheries and aquaculture, and oil and gas industries. E.T.M. Industries Inc. is an ISO 9000 registered manufacturing company, providing precision fabricated components for aerospace, automotive, defense, high technology, telecommunications and general industry. Presently employing a staff of 65, E.T.M. specializes in CNC machining, tooling and fixturing, and plastic injection molding. The Process Using only these acoustic projectors, objects maintain a position in the chamber's centre thereby providing a containerless environment. A space vision system is used to monitor the position of the object, and if it moves from a prescribed control zone, the acoustics activate and gently push the object back into position. The two systems worked on by E.T.M. form part of the processing chamber inside the quad locker. The robotic arm (the Material Handling System - MHS), is a linear actuator with a removable gripping device (end-effecter). The Pellet Storage System (PSS) is composed of a housing containing a carousel that holds up to five two-inch (5 cm) pellets and igniter coils. The two systems work together to process pellets remotely from the ground. A total of five pellets can be processed without astronaut intervention. - 30 - |
